BarkBarkBarkBarkBark!

What is it with dogs and barking?

My neighbor has 10 dogs. Every time I leash up my dog and take him out to our back yard, they all race each other to the side of the fence and commence barking their heads off. They do the same thing when someone walks down the sidewalk. Or when a cat roams nearby. Or when a leaf falls off a tree. You can tell one or two must be wearing bark collars, because the normal barks are occasionally interrupted by high-pitched yiiiiikkkess!

Doesn’t it seem like they’d get used to my dog coming out there a couple of times a day? That they’d eventually figure out, ‘Oh, it’s just that guy again. We know him. No need to sound the alarm.’

But no. Every single time, it’s, ‘OH MY GAWD THERE’S ANOTHER DOG WE BETTER WARN EVERYBODY DANGER DANGER IMMINENT END OF THE WORLD!’

I thought dogs were supposed to be smarter than that. Maybe they’re just too easily distracted. Maybe that’s why Dug the Dog in the movie ‘Up’ lost his train of thought every time he saw a squirrel.

(I do the whole ‘Squirrel!’ thing to my daughter all the time, by the way. She’s pretty easily distracted, too.)

Anyway, I need the dog whisperer over here. Stat. Or the remote control for those bark collars.

Just kidding. (I think.)

  1. I feel your pain. Aggravating and distracting. Too many dog owners aren’t responsible. “They’re just doing what dogs do.” But if my kids did that, you know they’d complain.

  2. Ooh, I hate that! I don’t understand why people have so many dogs if they don’t have room for them and have to shove them all outside all the time.

What do you think?
